Brad Smith - aka TheNurse: Condition is Improving

Thursday, November 10, 2011

Brad Smith, the energetic and fun-loving infosec professional known widely by his handle "TheNurse", is showing some very positive signs of recovery, according to his family.

Brad had suffered a serious stroke during the course of his presentation at the recent Hacker Halted conference in Miami, Florida.

Brad had immediately underwent a successful surgery, but is still in the ICU where the medical staff are monitoring his condition. The prognosis is positive, and Brad made some real progress this week.

"Today has been a good day!  Brad’s showing signs that he’s beginning to wake up!!  He’s opening his eyes slightly, blinking  and beginning to move his left arm from side to side and gripping.  This is such a positive sign.  I’m so happy that I was here to see it for myself.  Brad’s Mom, Bethene and brother, Harry were at his bedside to witness it too," Brad's wife Nina stated in an update on his condition.

Anyone who has experience in dealing with a serious medical episode knows that the situation can present a multitude of issues for family members and friends, and further complicating Brad's case is the fact that he is currently being cared for in Miami, thousands of miles from his home town in Montana.

For those who would like to stay informed during Brad's recovery, the Social Engineer website has been thoughtful enough to dedicate a space for periodic updates to be provided by Brad's family.

The updates webpage can be found here:

The Social Engineer website has also provided a means for concerned friends and colleagues to make donations to help Brad and his family with the immense and unexpected financial burden that comes with an extended stay far from home.

Infosec Island encourages those both in and outside of the information security community to make donations to the fund, which can be found here:

"Thank you all for your prayers, good thoughts and general positive energy. We still have a long way to go, but I’m savoring every good thing. Your support helps me so much when I’m feeling sad and vulnerable. Praise God! This was a very good day! Love to all," Nina Smith posted in a recent update.

Please help us spread the word, keep Brad and his family in your thoughts during his recovery, and donate to the fund today!
